Why Are Deadly Car Accidents on the Rise?

Even though many people are staying at home or close to home and not driving as much or as far as they used to, we still saw an increase in deadly car accidents on our roadways. There were reportedly 3,000 more car accident deaths during 2020 than there was the year before.

It was also noted that since there were fewer vehicles on the roadways, people chose to drive faster and more recklessly than they normally would have. As a result, they were driving at high speeds and demonstrated risky driving behaviors. This was documented by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Despite the higher number of deadly accidents, two categories actually saw a decrease in numbers. Those decreases were accidents involving large commercial or non-commercial trucks. There was a reported 2% decline in fatal auto accidents involving these vehicles in 2020. Another decline was seen in people 65 years of age and older, with a 9% decline.

Other Causes of Deadly Car Accidents

In addition to speed and reckless driving, there are several other common causes of deadly car accidents in Florida that we all should be aware of. Having this kind of knowledge can help us reduce the number of fatal accidents we see each year and can help make our roadways that much safer.

Driving While Fatigued

Driving while fatigued or drowsy driving accounts for approximately three percent of car crashes each year. If you are having a hard time staying awake, then you shouldn't be driving a vehicle.

Poor Weather Conditions

Poor weather conditions such as rain in Florida also greatly contribute to Florida car accidents. When it rains, the roads become slick and slippery, visibility is greatly reduced, and these conditions can lead to unpredictable driving patterns. Apart from weather conditions, other factors include sun glare and obstructed views.

Swerving

When a driver swerves to avoid hitting something in the road, it can cause an accident. In addition, an object might fall from trucks, pedestrians may be where they shouldn't be, and high wind conditions can also cause a driver to swerve. These types of accidents involve about 1,500 drivers per year.

Reckless Driving

Reckless driving and careless driving may sound similar, but they are two different things. A reckless driver shows a blatant disregard for road rules and the safety of other drivers. Approximately 3.5% of fatal auto accidents are the result of reckless driving.

Slow Down

To cut down on the number of fatal auto accidents we see each year, drivers need to slow down and pay attention to what is happening on the road. Unfortunately, when people drive too fast in adverse conditions, fail to pay attention to road signs, and disregard speed limits, the outcome can prove to be disastrous.

If you or a loved one have been injured in a car accident due to the negligence of another driver, you may be entitled to compensation. Consult an experienced personal injury attorney regarding the details of your case, and they will walk you through the process.
