Motorcyclist Dies After Hit-and-Run Crash In Saint Petersburg Saturday

In a recent accident in Saint Petersburg, a 20-year-old man involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident handed himself over to the police on Tuesday afternoon.

The St. Petersburg Police Department identified Jakil Powell in a statement released on Tuesday evening as the person who was operating a white Jeep Grand Cherokee that fled the accident scene. The accident occurred around 3:30 P.M. on Saturday at the intersection of 22nd Avenue South and 45th Street South. Powell had crashed into a Honda motorcycle.

According to the police, Jonathan Hughes was traveling westbound on 22nd Avenue South in the wide outside lane at the time of the accident. Powell, on the other hand, was driving eastbound in the median lane. Upon reaching the intersection of 45th Street South, Powell attempted to make a northbound turn. In doing so, he allegedly failed to adhere to the right of way, thus colliding with Huges’ motorcycle.

The impact of the collision led to the unfortunate death of Hughes, who was also from Saint Petersburg, as reported by the police.

Following the accident, Powell is facing charges of fleeing an accident scene that resulted in a fatality. After being taken into custody, he was confined to a Pinellas County jail as recent updates were released on Tuesday evening.
