Fiery Roll-Over Car Accident On US 19 Injures Two Women In Saint Petersburg

An accident on U.S. Highway 19 early Sunday morning resulted in two women being hospitalized, according to the Clearwater Police Department.

The incident took place just after 4 a.m. on July 2 in the highway's southbound lanes near Drew Street. The vehicle reportedly crashed into the median, overturned, and subsequently caught fire. No other vehicles were implicated in the accident, and excessive speed is considered a possible contributing factor.

The women were conveyed to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, although their current medical statuses have not been provided.

The accident occurred on a section of Pinellas County's U.S. 19, an area recognized for its challenging driving conditions. The plans for enhancing the safety conditions of Drew Street, a significant east-west route in Clearwater, have been under discussion for over seven years, with some opposition from the city’s chamber of commerce due to potential business and traffic implications.

Since the year's commencement, preliminary data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles indicates there have been at least 48 fatalities resulting from crashes in Pinellas County.
